1961 plans for Piccadilly
This is a rather glorious Pathe News clip of plans for Piccadily Circus in London, with various shortlisted and winning schemes on display, as well as beautiful footage of the circus as was in its postwar heyday. At one stage a fifth of the west end was up for redevelopment, but in the end very few of those schemes made it. William Holford's masterplan limped on till the early 70s before a change in political climate, national bankruptcy and a loss of faith in redevelopment did for it.
