Tallinn Tales

Actually, I don't have any tales to tell, but I liked the title. But here's some pics from my trip to the beautiful capital of Estonia last week, a city that boasts a huge and unspoiled medieval old town, an ancient fortress wall and some extraordinary Soviet-era buildings.

Fortifications and the town wall were built on an artificial hill built by the Swedes, one of the many countries to have invaded Estonia over the last thousand years.

The Estonian Orthodox Cathedral was built at the start of the 20th Century.

The square was used by the Soviets for their parades, taking the centre of Tallinn away from the old town or the walled fortress. The Soviets invaded in 1944 and didn't leave until the collapse of the USSR in 1989.

The tall rocket-like building is the remarkable 12th Century town hall.
