Could I be any more obsessed with London Bridge Station?
Building Design today carried the story of Grimshaw's proposed designs for the new London Bridge Station. Here's the view from Tooley Street:
This bit worried me:
'The number of tracks running through the station will be increased from six to nine while the number of terminating platforms will be reduced. The change will allow 18 Thameslink trains an hour to call at the station.'
Hmm. Reducing the platforms for terminating trains... Like the already overcrowded ones I get. Nice. Presumably the Thameslink trains will be off on what looks like a corkscrew rollecoaster being constructed where once New London Bridge House and Borough Market stood.
Good old Renzo Piano has farmed out the current concourse redesign to Pascall and Watson, who have been making progress in fits and starts, demolishing the bus station roof and crashing the Shard through the wall of the station:
Meanwhile, high above the Shard gets shardier every day, and passengers on Platform 6 of a morning regularly spend their commute gawping up at its collossal bluntness.
I think the upgrade of the station should mean they can run more trains, so it should be less crowded. They can always terminate trains at non-terminating platforms.
ReplyDeleteApparently Borough market was a big bottle-neck in the rail system and now they will be able to run many more through trains. So maybe your train will run through to Cannon St or Blackfriars in future...
Ah yes, I hadn't thought that more LB trains might become through trains: interesting.
ReplyDeleteMust take some snaps of the new rail bridge over Borough, it's dead impressive.
